How to Escape the 9-to-5 without Selling Everything You Own

There comes a moment in every desk job where you realise you’ve checked your email six times in the last ten minutes, not because you’re busy but because you’re bored. And maybe it’s not burnout (or maybe it is), but it’s just that deep, gnawing feeling that your skills are being wasted on Zoom calls that could’ve been emails. If you’ve hit that point, you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not doomed to stay stuck.

It can be scary, because a lot of people want to change their lives, but they hear left and right that you’ll lose your safety net or you might have to sell what you love just to escape a 9-to-5. But thankfully, there are ways to shake things up, explore the world, and still have a steady income without diving headfirst into startup chaos.

Is Remote Work Possible?

Well, for starters, remote work isn’t just a pandemic trend; honestly, it’s a lifestyle shift that’s opened doors for people who used to be chained to office chairs. Technically, before COVID, it was slowly rising, but since then, it has been pushed more (and thankfully more normalised too). So, maybe you’ve already dipped a toe into working from anywhere, or maybe you’re still clutching your office badge like it’s a comfort blanket. But either way, the appeal of sending emails from a beachside café or tackling spreadsheets with a mountain view is real (but it’s not always that perfect, though).

For the most part, remote work gives you flexibility, but it can also feel a little like floating in space. Just think about it; no meetings, no commute, no annoying co-worker microwaving fish, but also no boundaries, no real stop time, and definitely no vending machine snacks. Without structure, some people thrive, and sure, others spiral. So, this could be something for you if it’s not so much of the 9 to 5, rather, the fact that you have to go to the office daily.

Turning Your Skills into Something Portable

So you can work for an employee if you want to, but alternatively, why not work for yourself? You pretty much don’t need to reinvent yourself to fit the digital nomad lifestyle. Rather, you just need to pivot. There are writers, marketers, consultants, virtual assistants, designers, coaches, the list of remote-friendly careers is longer than ever (and honestly, it’s just going to keep on going). Besides, if you’ve built up skills in your 9-to-5, you’ve already got a head start.

One thing you could do (and a lot of people will start by freelancing on the side) while they’re still working their 9-to-5. But if you did freelancing on the side, then you could build up a few clients or projects. You’ll get a feel for managing your own schedule and income, while still having the safety net of your current job.

But of course, the goal here is to make the leap once you’re confident your wings actually work. Think of it like dipping a toe in before doing a cannonball.

Just Buy a Franchise (Yes, Really)

If freelancing or creating a business from scratch sounds more terrifying than liberating, there’s another option: just buying into something that already exists. Honestly, the road to entrepreneurship, or at least more freedom within your career, doesn’t need to be the same as everyone else’s. So, why a franchise? Well, it’s not the corporate life, but it’s not the wild west either, meaning that buying into a franchise gives you independence without starting from zero.

And it doesn’t have to be brick-and-mortar, that’s usually what comes to mind for the average person, but no, that’s not the only thing available when it comes to franchises. Actually, a good chunk of franchises nowadays are actually built for remote work, or at least semi-remote models (but it does depend on what it is of of course).

But browsing franchises for sale could be the move that gives you both freedom and security, but you’ll have to do a lot of research because this does need to match the lifestyle that you want.

Finding Your Work-from-Anywhere Groove

So you’ve got the remote gig, the laptop, and the wanderlust. Okay, but now what? Well, it’s not just about hopping on planes and chasing sunsets. Honestly, the magic’s in the details, some people like to go to cafes (but a lot of cafes aren’t really welcoming this as much anymore), others just want to figure out time zones for remote jobs so they don’t need to work at 3 am, and of course there’s navigating airport security while still juggling work at the same time too.

By all means, this life is dreamy, but it still needs a rhythm, meaning that having designated work hours, boundaries with clients, and realistic daily goals can mean the difference between thriving and burning out in paradise. Set yourself up like a boss, even if your ‘office’ changes every month.
